The St. Tammany Parish School Board is set to appoint a new member Monday night (Feb. 2). The board has scheduled a special meeting for 7 p.m. in its chambers at the C.J. Schoen Administrative Complex, 321 N. Theard St., Covington.
There are two items on the board’s agenda: Choosing an interim member for the open 12th District post; and calling for a special election in October to fill the post on a permanent basis.
The Slidell-based seat has been vacant since thedeath last month of longtime 12th District School Board member James “Ronnie” Panks.
Under board policy, the board put out notice for applications from anyone in the 12th District interested in being considered as the interim member. The application process closed last week. The board will hear pitches from those applicants Monday night before voting on a new member.
The interim member will hold the post until the district’s voters elect a permanent member in the Oct. 24 election. That member would then fill the remaining three-plus years left in Panks’ term.
The appointment procedure is identical to the one the board used last year to appoint Anthony Alfred on an interim basis to the 14th District post that opened when his son, Anthony Alfred, died.
An election to permanently fill the Slidell-based 14th District post is scheduled for March 28. Qualifying for that campaign will begin this Wednesday (Feb. 4) and run through Friday (Feb. 6).
